Brian Scherle and Paul Gabriel set out to open a restaurant in downtown Northville. Then they found a space that seemed made for an ice cream shop—and a different kind of idea took shape.

In 2015, BROWNDOG opened as a small-batch micro-creamery, built around their shared love of food and a willingness to try something unexpected. Everyday flavors were only the beginning. This was a place to experiment, get creative, and give people something worth coming back for.

By the following year, demand meant they needed more room to make ice cream. A space in downtown Farmington, originally intended for production and a small scoop shop, became the next chapter: BROWNDOG Barlor & Restaurant, bringing craft cocktails and savory food into the mix.

That same playful curiosity is still at the heart of BROWNDOG. Michigan roots, small-batch craft, and big personality—in every scoop.

Our namesake is Brian and Paul’s rescued Boston Terrier. The family’s first ice cream shop was named after Stuart, another rescue dog. When it was time for a new concept, Flash deserved his turn.

That affection for rescue animals is still part of who we are.
